GUWAHATI, July 8: The Assam Government shared data on crimes against women in the state during the ongoing Assam Assembly Budget Session.
Replying to an unstarred question by MLA Wazid Ali Choudhary, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the Home Department portfolio, presented the data to the House.
According to the data shared by the Chief Minister, Assam registered 2,04,134 crimes against women from 2016 to June 26, 2026.
The Chief Minister informed that the cases include:
- Murder: 2,677
- Rape: 14,456
- Dowry-related offences: 1,463
- Other crimes: 1,85,538
The data highlighted that 2018 recorded the highest number of crimes in the last 10 years. That year, the state reported 2,648 rape cases and 304 murder cases involving women.
The government also submitted district-wise and year-wise data to the Assembly for the information of the members.
The Chief Minister also informed the House that since the present government took oath, 46 murder cases involving women have been registered.
The data was announced as part of the government’s regular update on law and order during the Budget Session.
