GUWAHATI,4thJuly 2023: A total of 2011 students (1605Male and406Female) from the Silver Jubilee batch of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati received their degrees in various disciplines today (4th July 2023) during the 25th Convocation Ceremony.
Pradnesh Prasad Kalkar (B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering) achieved top score in the entire BTech/BDes batch and was awarded the President of India Gold Medal. Amey Ramesh Rambatla (B.Tech, Biotechnology)won the Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Among the graduating class, 20 students are Persons with Disabilities.

Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Hon’ble Vice President of India graced the occasion as Chief Guest along with Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Assam and Dr. HimantaBiswa Sarma. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam as the Guests of Honour. Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman, Board of Governor, IIT Guwahati, presided over the event.
Presenting the Convocation Report, Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, said,“On the Twenty Fifth Convocation Ceremony, I am delighted to share that IIT Guwahati is scaling heights and setting new standards in all domains. IIT Guwahati has provided a strong academic and value-based foundation to these graduating students so that they carry forth the values of integrity, humility and empathy imbibed within them. The Institute has collaborated with the Central, State governments along with national and international bodies for multiple research, innovation, and academic collaborations to address the challenges of the beneficiaries at large with a focus on sustainable development. The Centre for Sustainable Water Research is one such example that will bring scientific tools to cater the sustainable use of water in the region as well as for the whole country. The Centre for Sustainable Polymers at IIT Guwahati is another such example of the same.”
Further, Prof. Iyer said, “On the collaboration front, at present IIT Guwahati has 171MoUs active with institutions and organization from all over the world for research and academic collaborations. In collaboration with six foreign Universities, IIT Guwahati has created joint degree programs designed to prepare students for acquiring balanced expertise with effective understanding on various aspects of Science and Engineering. As a result, the Institute has recorded around 80% placements in the 2022-23 academic year. I, on behalf of the institute, offer my hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the graduating students on successful completion of your academic journeys.”
IIT Guwahati attracts the brightest students from across the country for its Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs. The strength of international students is also growing steadily. In the 29 years of its existence, more than 20000 students have graduated from IIT Guwahati.
Delivering the Convocation address, Chief Guest,Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Hon’ble Vice-President of India, said, “My congratulations to the graduating class. Alumni is the strength of an Institution and you all are the richest think-tank of IIT Guwahati. The nation has great expectations from you. Our country’s phenomenal unprecedented growth lies in your hands. In this Amrit kaal, it is our prime duty to work towards making India ‘AtmaNirbhar’.”
Further, Hon’ble Chief Guest said,“With its constant efforts to be the best educational and research Institute, IIT Guwahati is on an Incremental trajectory for almost 3 decades. In the same spirit, I am glad to announce that the Indian Council of World Affairs will get into a collaboration with IIT Guwahati next month. I am very glad to see the responsibilities IIT Guwahati has taken for the development of the entire North-East region of our country. With these collective efforts, I am sure the rise of India is unstoppable.”
IIT Guwahati is on its path to be recognized as one of the world’s top Institutes/Universities. By implementing NEP 2020 policies, IIT Guwahati is leaping forward by embracing the rising demands of interdisciplinary research areas and technology development including participating in offering courses in futuristic areas, providing thrust to start-up culture, Entrepreneurship at all levels and creation of jobs in the North East.
Addressing the students, Guest of Honour, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Assam, said, “On a personal level, this is my first experience of witnessing 2011 degrees being conferred to students in a Convocation ceremony. I am very happy to be a part of this landmark achievement. The efforts being made by IIT Guwahati for the implementation of NEP 2020 are notable. On this 25th convocation day, I extend my heartiest congratulations to the Class of 2023. Today, you have not only graduated but have started an exciting journey to lead the world with your knowledge, and wisdom. All of your future achievements will not only create an impact on your family and the Institute but will also glorify the state of Assam and the Country.”
Speaking during the event, Dr. HimantaBiswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, said, “My dear graduating students of IIT Guwahati, never stop dreaming, nurture your curiosity and cherish the values that the institute has helped to instil in you. Let the ethics and values of the Institute guide you at every step of your life. IIT Guwahati has been making the region and the nation very proud by repeatedly making its mark in national and international levels. The Govt. of Assam along with IIT Guwahati has taken major initiatives in multiple sectors such as education. healthcare, disaster management, heritage preservation, wildlife protection, and skill development, for the overall benefit of the region. These joint efforts will surely contribute greatly in making ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’.”
During the reporting year, IIT Guwahati started an advanced certification programme in Digital Supply Chain Management that is designed for graduates and diploma holders looking to upskill and gain better employment opportunities in Digital Supply Chain Management.
Apart from this,with a motive to work on strengthening and expanding drone-based training, research and development, manufacturing for varied sectors, the Institute collaborated with industry partners to establish a commercial Drone Flying School to offer professional courses in this field.
Apart from this, the Institute has 333 research projects in progress with a total sanctioned value of about Rs. 493.66 crore. In the year under report, a total of 137 new projects with a sanctioned value of Rs. 119.05 crore were sanctioned with different funding agencies including the Department of Higher Education (DHE), the Departments of Science and Technology (DST) and Biotechnology (DBT), the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Along with this, with an aim to provide world-class healthcare services and boost R&D in the Northeast region of India, IIT Guwahati laid the foundation stone of Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII) with the hands of Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, AAHII will be a Research and Innovation Institute in the area of medical sciences which includes a 500-bedded ‘Connected’ Multi-Specialty Hospital spread over 12 Acre land in the existing IIT Guwahati campus.
These initiatives will help in developing indigenous technologies and will generate direct and indirect employment opportunities.
IIT Guwahati has retained the 7thand 8th rank among the best ‘Engineering’ and ‘Overall’Institutions of the country in the ‘India Rankings 2022’, declared by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
