GUWAHATI, July 8: The Assam Government has reported its crackdown on illegal sawmills and timber-related activities across the state.
According to the Forest Department, on July 7, the department seized 8 more illegal band sawmills. With this, the total number of illegal sawmills seized in the last seven days has reached 212.
The latest seizures were carried out in different parts of the state:
- Northeastern Assam Circle: 3
- Eastern Assam Circle: 2
- Lower Assam Zone: 3
The enforcement drives have been ongoing since June 30, during which 212 illegal sawmills have been seized in seven days.
Forest, Environment and Mines Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the crackdown will continue in the coming days.
“The government remains committed to protecting Assam’s forests. We will take strict action against anyone involved in illegal timber activities,” the minister said.
Officials said the main aim of the drive is to stop the illegal timber trade, strengthen forest protection, and conserve Assam’s ecological heritage.
The Forest Department has asked people to share information about any illegal sawmill operating in their area.
