AASU threatens stir over MoA on Subansiri

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today described the memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed by the State government with the NHPC on the 2000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project as the ‘utmost insult, mockery and deceit’ of the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government on the people of Assam.

Alleging that the State government has compromised the interest of the State at the instance of New Delhi, it warned that it would take recourse to agitation and will determine its next course of action in consultation with its 30 ally organisations.
The student body said in a statement here this evening that the State government has signed the MoA with the NHPC, keeping the State’s people in the dark. It said that the MoA has been signed at a time when the people of the State have been agitating over the power project.

State’s people have been taking recourse to rational and scientific arguments in support of their opposition to the idea of construction of this hydel project. But the government did not bother to take the people into confidence and singed the MoA furtively, alleged the student body.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that AASU and its ally organisations have been demanding that first of all steps should be taken to ensure safety of life and property of the people living in the downstream areas of the power project. The entire issue has been raised scientifically and sensibly.

The Central and State governments have lost the courage to face the experts of the State and to confront their arguments on the power project. Their deeds are not compatible with their words on the issue of mega dam projects, said the student body.

AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that taking advantage of a brute majority in Parliament the Union government is trying to impose its decision on the Subansiri project on the people of Assam. But the people of the State would resist it, he said.

The AASU will hold an emergent meeting of its executive committee to discuss issues concerning National Register of Citizens and the Subansiri project at 11 am on August 27 at its Gauhati University headquarters.
