AJP Vice-President Mainak Patra Resigns From Party

GUWAHATI: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) suffered another setback on Saturday as senior leader Mainak Patra resigned from the party, stepping down from both his primary membership and his position as the party’s central vice-president.

Patra submitted his resignation to AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, citing personal reasons for his decision. In his resignation letter dated May 30, he informed the party leadership that he would no longer be associated with organisational activities and was relinquishing all responsibilities with immediate effect.

Thanking the party leadership and workers, Patra expressed appreciation for the opportunities and experiences he gained during his tenure with the regional political outfit. He also conveyed his gratitude to party members for their support and cooperation throughout his political journey within the organisation.

In the letter, Patra described his association with the party as a valuable experience and extended his best wishes for the future growth and success of the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

His departure comes amid a series of developments within the party and follows the recent exit of another senior leader, Rajen Gohain, adding to concerns over internal challenges facing the regional outfit.

Patra was among the prominent faces of the AJP during the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and contested from the Dibrugarh Assembly constituency. However, he was defeated by BJP candidate and incumbent MLA Prasanta Phukan.

Having figured in the party’s initial list of candidates for the Assembly polls, Patra played a visible role in AJP’s electoral campaign in Upper Assam and was considered one of the party’s key leaders in the region.
