Assam Budget 2026: ₹100 Crore Each for Seven Universities, Roadmap for ‘One District, One University

GUWAHATI, July 10: Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, while presenting the Assam Budget 2026, announced a major push for higher education under the initiative “Viksit Asomor Shiksha Sanskar – Education for Viksit Assam.”

The minister said the government’s long-term vision is “One District, One University, One Medical College, One Engineering College,” with a roadmap to be prepared to ensure access to quality higher education in every district.

To strengthen the state’s higher education infrastructure, the government has proposed ₹100 crore each, to be released in phases, for Sibsagar University, Jagannath Barooah University, Nagaon University, North Lakhimpur University, Kokrajhar University, Bongaigaon University, and Gurucharan University.

In addition, ₹50 crore each has been proposed for Madhabdev University, Bhattadev University, Rabindranath Tagore University, Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya, Assam Women’s University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, and Majuli University of Culture.

The Finance Minister also announced ₹100 crore for Gauhati University in this year’s budget, following the ₹100 crore already provided to Dibrugarh University, as part of the government’s plan to build a stronger, regionally balanced, and future-ready higher education network across Assam.

He further said the government will continue the process of provincialising eligible venture colleges across the state.
