GUWAHATI, July 10: Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, while presenting the Assam Budget 2026, announced a ₹2,500-crore project to shift Guwahati’s overhead power network to underground cables in a phased manner.
The minister said the project aims to modernise the city’s infrastructure, improve public safety, and enhance Guwahati’s overall appearance.
As part of the first phase, ₹200 crore will be spent under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to underground power lines along five major stretches: Paltan Bazar Square; AT Road from Paltan Bazar to Bharalumukh; MG Road from Bharalumukh to Padum Pukhuri; GS Road from Paltan Bazar to GMCH Road, including GMCH Road; and GS Road from Bhangagarh to the Dispur Secretariat.
The government said the initiative is expected to improve the reliability of the power distribution network while making Guwahati’s roads safer and more aesthetically appealing.
