GUWAHATI, July 10: Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, while presenting the Assam Budget 2026, announced Mission Senehjori, a three-year initiative aimed at transforming Assam into the global hub of GI-tagged Golden Muga Silk.
Launched in partnership with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), the mission will be implemented with an investment of around ₹400 crore.
The minister said the initiative will benefit nearly 2.6 lakh rearers, reelers, weavers, and entrepreneurs by strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain—from host plantation, seed production, and rearing to reeling, weaving, branding, GI authentication, digital traceability, exports, and market access.
Under the mission, the government will establish modern reeling infrastructure and organise producers into 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) and 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) by 2028.
As part of the initiative, a Muga Silk Tourism Park will be developed at Dhakuakhana at a cost of ₹8.44 crore, while a Muga Spun Mill will be set up at Dhemaji with an investment of ₹10 crore. These projects aim to promote silk tourism, convert silk waste into high-value spun Muga yarn, reduce wastage, generate employment, and enhance value addition in the sector.
