Assam Chief Secy to appear in SC today

The Assam Government is likely to plead before the Supreme Court on Thursday that the task of deportation of foreigners lies with the Government of India and they have no role to play.
A day ahead of the hearing of the case filed by human rights activist Harsh Mander, the State Government has filed an additional affidavit before the Apex Court, wherein it has elaborated the measures taken by the State Government to tackle the problem and the measures it proposes to take to revamp the detention centres.
Sources said that the State Government is going to plead that the job of deportation lies with the Central Government and the State has no hand in it. It also plans to inform the court that it proposes to set up additional 1000 Foreigners Tribunals.

Sources said that the Chief Secretary is going to appear before the Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The Joint Secretary (Border Management) is also likely to appear tomorrow in keeping with the Apex Court’s orders.

Sources explained that the problem of illegal migration in Assam has a long history and the State will try to impress upon the Apex Court about some of the measures taken to check it.
