The Chief Minister, who observed a guard of honour on the bank of Brahmaputra river in Guwahati’s Kasomari Ghat, saluted and bowed down to the spirit of the brave general. A dance drama was also organised in honour of the Ahom General.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said that because of the general’s bravery shown in the 17th century, everybody in the country is highly inspired and encouraged. “Out of his greatest personality, everyone has been able to gather courage, determination, honesty, and sense of patriotism in the country,” he added.

During the last phase of the Battle of Saraighat when the Mughals attacked the Assamese forces through the river in Saraighat, many Assamese soldiers began losing their will to fight. It was Lachit’s clarion call to all the soldiers that made them fight till their last breath, ultimately resulting in the defeat of the Mughals.

Every year since 1999, the best passing out cadet of the National Defence Academy (NDA) is conferred with the ‘Lachit Borphukan gold medal’.
