Assam Govt in Talks With ‘Uri’ Director Aditya Dhar for Grand Lachit Borphukan Biopic

GUWAHATI, July 17: The Assam Government is in discussions with filmmaker Aditya Dhar, director of the National Award-winning Uri: The Surgical Strike and the upcoming Dhurandhar, to direct a big-budget biopic on legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session on July 16, the Chief Minister said the state government is exploring the possibility of backing a Bollywood-scale production based on the life and legacy of the 17th-century military commander.

The proposed film will focus on Lachit Borphukan, who is celebrated for leading the Ahom forces to victory against the Mughal army in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671, one of the defining moments in Assam’s history.

CM Sarma said talks are currently underway with Aditya Dhar, and that he is scheduled to meet the filmmaker in August for detailed discussions regarding the project.

The Chief Minister, however, made it clear that the government is determined to make the film regardless of who directs it.

“If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made,” he said.

If the project goes ahead, it will mark the first time the Assam Government backs a Bollywood-scale feature film centred on the life of Lachit Borphukan.

The Chief Minister said the objective is to showcase Assam’s rich history and the bravery of Lachit Borphukan to audiences across India and around the world.

Lachit Borphukan is revered across Assam as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and military leadership. His victory in the Battle of Saraighat continues to be regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the state’s history.
