Assam Taxi Union Blocks Jorabat Highway Over Alleged Stone-Pelting on Vehicles

Guwahati: Members of the Assam State Taxi Driver Union on Friday staged a highway blockade at Jorabat, disrupting traffic between Assam and Meghalaya over alleged stone-pelting incidents targeting Assam-bound vehicles.

According to the union, the alleged attacks took place after a KSU bike rally in Shillong. Protesters condemned the incidents, claiming that vehicles travelling from Meghalaya into Assam were attacked and questioning why ordinary commuters were being targeted.

The blockade affected the movement of commercial and private vehicles, as well as trucks carrying food, essential commodities and other goods, causing major inconvenience to commuters.

Union leaders also criticised the Meghalaya Government and police, alleging that adequate action had not been taken against those responsible for the alleged attacks.

Warning of a stronger protest, the union said both entry routes connecting Assam and Meghalaya could be blocked if their demands are not addressed.

The protesters have demanded that senior officials from the Meghalaya Government visit Jorabat for talks. They said the agitation would continue until concrete assurances are given and normal movement between the two states is restored.
