Guwahati: Badruddin Ajmal has stirred fresh controversy in Assam after referring to “phook” (hexing) while criticising statements linked to ongoing eviction drives in the state.
Speaking to the media, the AIUDF chief took a sharp dig at the political narrative surrounding evictions, suggesting that certain remarks and actions were driven by negativity and fear. His reference to “phook” quickly drew attention, adding a new dimension to the already heated political discourse.
The issue of eviction has remained a major flashpoint in Assam politics, with the state government defending its actions as necessary to clear illegal encroachments, while opposition leaders, including Ajmal, have repeatedly criticised the drives for their impact on poor and minority communities.
Ajmal has consistently opposed eviction operations, alleging that they disproportionately affect vulnerable sections of society and calling for a more humanitarian approach, including proper rehabilitation measures.
The latest remark is expected to intensify the ongoing war of words between the ruling dispensation and opposition leaders, as eviction politics continues to dominate Assam’s political landscape.
