GUWAHATI, SEPTEMBER 26, 2026: The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), Assam State Committee, formally installed its newly elected office-bearers and executive members at a ceremony held on Saturday at Sangitacharya Lakshiram Barua Sadan of the Assam Sahitya Sabha Office, Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati.
The ceremony marked the formal commencement of the new organisational term following the 7th Triennial Assam State General Conference of the Parisangh, held at North Lakhimpur on August 24 and 25, where a new state executive committee was elected for the 2026–2029 term.
Khem Bahadur Pradhan formally assumed charge as the new President, while Mukti Nath Luitel took charge as General Secretary. They succeed the interim leadership of Amar Adhikari and Nanda Kirati Dewan, who steered the organisation through its Silver Jubilee celebrations and the subsequent organisational transition.
The programme was attended by senior national and regional leaders of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh. BGP National President Nityananda Upadhyay, National Vice President Prakash Dahal, North East Zone President Dr. Dilip Chetry and Joint Secretary General Bimal Pradhan were present at the ceremony and witnessed the formal installation of the new Assam leadership.
Among the distinguished guests were Gorkha Autonomous Council Development Committee (GACDC) Chief Secretary Padum Baraily, Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha Working President Dr. Indu Prabha Devi and All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) General Secretary Somraj Sonar.
The presence of leaders representing various community organisations and institutions added significance to the occasion, which brought together representatives from different spheres of Gorkha social, cultural, literary, youth and organisational life.
The Chairman of the Gorkha Development Council (GDC), Government of Assam, Prem Tamang, attended the programme as the Chief Guest and congratulated the newly installed office-bearers. He stressed the importance of greater organisational unity and collective responsibility and said the Gorkha community must remain firmly rooted in its cultural identity while actively participating in the social and developmental mainstream of Assam.
Tamang expressed confidence that the new leadership would work with dedication to address the aspirations and concerns of the Gorkha community across the state.
AAGSU General Secretary Somraj Sonar, speaking as a Special Guest, congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and executive members. He said he felt honoured and proud to be present at the ceremony and expressed the hope that the Parisangh would play an increasingly strong and far-reaching role in promoting unity, solidarity, self-respect and the all-round development of the Indian Gorkha community.
Sonar also highlighted the significance of the Silver Jubilee Special Issue of ‘Raithaney’, the multilingual mouthpiece of BGP Assam, describing it as an important contribution towards documenting and promoting Gorkha literature, culture, history, traditions and contemporary thought.
The ceremony also featured the Assam Gorkha Gaurav Samman, recognising contributions to the Gorkha community. Entrepreneurs Suman Rai KC and Gopal KC were honoured with the Assam Gorkha Gaurav Samman for their contributions and service to the community.
In another significant recognition, senior Assam Administrative Service officer Rajib Thapa, ACS, was accorded a special felicitation during the programme in recognition of his association and contribution to the community.
The event was also attended by BGP Patron and industrialist Ganesh Sharma, along with several senior members, office-bearers and representatives of the Parisangh and members of the wider Gorkha community.
Speaking on the occasion, President Khem Bahadur Pradhan thanked the delegates, members and well-wishers for reposing their confidence in the new leadership. He said the new committee would prioritise organisational strengthening, greater youth involvement and preservation of Gorkha language, culture and traditions.
Pradhan also emphasised issues concerning land rights and indigenous identity, stating that the organisation would continue to work collectively and democratically on matters affecting the community.
General Secretary Mukti Nath Luitel assured that the new committee would maintain regular communication with the community and strengthen coordination among the state, district and grassroots committees. He said the Parisangh would work closely with other Gorkha organisations and institutions to pursue common objectives and promote collective progress.
The outgoing leadership expressed satisfaction over the smooth transition. Interim President Amar Adhikari and Interim General Secretary Nanda Kirati Dewan congratulated the newly installed team and urged the new committee to carry forward the unfinished organisational agenda with renewed energy, commitment and unity.
The programme also witnessed the formal release of the Silver Jubilee Special Issue of ‘Raithaney’, documenting the 25-year journey of BGP in Assam and featuring the organisation’s activities, achievements, community initiatives, cultural heritage, history and contemporary concerns.
The installation ceremony came at an important juncture for the Assam State Committee, following the completion of its Silver Jubilee year. With the new leadership assuming office for the 2026–2029 term, the organisation now enters a new phase of its journey with an emphasis on grassroots organisational strengthening, youth participation, cultural preservation and addressing issues concerning the rights, identity, welfare and development of the Gorkha community in Assam.
