In his public address, Sonowal said that the State Government will allot land pattas to all landless families of the State in a phased manner.

The Chief Minister said that altogether 11,500 landless families will be provided land pattas initially. He added that the Government will try to give pattas to the remaining landless people thereafter.

Sonowal said, it was a “matter of pain” that a large number of people living in the State for decades did not have ownership over their land.

“This (allotting of land pattas) is being done to protect our jati-mati and bheti,” the Chief Minister said.

He further said that the first necessity for saving traditional customs, rituals, social practices, art, culture and heritage of a nation is land. The Chief Minister said that constitutional rights enjoyed by an individual over his land only indicates his/her security and dignity.

Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra, CEM of Deori Autonomous Council Madhab Deori and Satradhikar of Uttar Kamalabari Satra Janardan Devagoswami were also present at the function.

The land patta distribution programmes were held in many districts of Assam on Sunday with the Chief Minister attending such a function at Balipara in Sonitpur district.
