Former All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar has resigned from the Indian National Congress, alleging serious ideological and moral differences with the party’s senior leadership in Assam.
In his resignation letter dated January 14 and addressed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, Sarkar said he had joined the Congress inspired by its commitment to secularism, inclusive politics and constitutional values. However, he stated that recent public statements and positions taken by senior party leaders had left him deeply distressed.
Sarkar specifically referred to the actions and remarks of Assam Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, stating that their stand on recent issues caused him “deep moral and ideological anguish.” He claimed that these developments had not only demoralised him but had also affected his public image.
In a strongly worded letter, Sarkar alleged that the conduct of the two leaders resembled that of “BJP agents,” adding that their presence within the party made it impossible for him to continue his association with the Congress.
“Under these circumstances, I find it difficult to continue my association with the party,” Sarkar wrote, announcing his resignation from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect. Despite his sharp criticism, he extended his wishes for the party’s future.
Rejaul Karim Sarkar is considered a prominent minority youth leader in Assam and previously served as president of the All Assam Minorities Students’ Union. His exit from the Congress is expected to draw political reactions, particularly in minority-dominated constituencies.
There was no immediate response from the APCC or from the leaders named in the resignation letter at the time of filing this report
