In a world where many give up before they truly begin, the story of Sumi Kalita stands as a powerful reminder that passion, patience, and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
Born on 22nd January 1999 at Hudumpur village near Palasbari in Assam’s Kamrup district, Sumi grew up in a humble family. Her mother, Chitra Kalita and father Anil Kalita, nurtured her upbringing but it was music that shaped her identity. From a very young age, Sumi showed a deep connection with music—a connection that would later define her life.
Unlike many prodigies, Sumi’s journey did not begin with early fame or recognition. She took her first serious step into music at the age of 14—an age when many feel it might already be too late to start. But Sumi proved otherwise. With dedication, she pursued formal training, earning a degree in classical vocal music while also developing her skills in commercial music.
Her early days were filled with challenges. She participated in numerous competitions but faced repeated disappointments. Not winning could have easily discouraged her—but Sumi chose resilience over defeat. Her turning point came after two years of continuous effort, when she secured 3rd position in a Jyoti Sangeet competition in Palasbari. That moment was not just a win—it was the beginning of a new chapter.
From there, success followed steadily. Sumi went on to win multiple awards across diverse musical genres including Bhupendra Sangeet, Rabha Sangeet, Jyoti Sangeet, Borgeet, and Lokogeet. Her versatility and dedication made her stand out in the cultural landscape of Assam.
One of her most remarkable achievements came when she became the 2nd runner-up in Sambhabana (2020–2021), a prestigious reality show broadcast on Doordarshan. She also proudly represented Kamrup district at the state level in the Assam Sangskritik Mahasangram, organised by Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam ,in two categories—Bhupendra Sangeet and Rabha Sangeet—further cementing her position as a talented and committed artist.
Today, Sumi Kalita is not just a singer but a celebrated stage performer. Over the past six years, she has performed in more than 100 stage shows across various districts and states, captivating audiences with her soulful voice and energetic performances, especially during vibrant Bihu celebrations.
With over 80 awards to her name, Sumi’s journey is a testament to what determination can achieve. Beyond music, she is also contributing to society through her work in the social sector, balancing passion with purpose.
Her story carries a powerful message for aspiring artists: it is never too late to start. Many young people hesitate, thinking they have missed their chance but Sumi’s life proves otherwise. Talent may spark the journey, but it is persistence that sustains it.
