GUWAHATI, July 14: A pregnant woman from Garbhanga had to be taken to hospital on a makeshift stretcher on Sunday after no ambulance could reach her village.
The incident occurred in Numoli Pathar village in the Garbhanga Reserve Forest area near Rani, under the Palasbari Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). Due to the absence of a proper road, villagers were forced to carry her across rough and muddy paths before she could be shifted to a vehicle for treatment.
The woman was seen seated on a chair tied to bamboo sticks, while local people walked alongside to support her during the journey.
People in the area said this is a recurring problem. They have been demanding better road connectivity and emergency health services for years, but according to them, government assurances have not translated into action.
The incident has once again exposed how many villages in Garbhanga remain cut off from basic infrastructure and depend entirely on the help of neighbours during emergencies.
Residents are now urging the administration to act quickly and provide a motorable road and better health facilities, saying they cannot wait for another emergency to highlight how vulnerable they are.
