Guwahati: Food Sold from Public Toilet Complex Sparks Debate Over Safety

GUWAHATI, July 9: A food stall operating from inside a public toilet complex in Arya Nagar has raised questions about hygiene, public health, and official permission.

The stall is located inside the public toilet complex near Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute. Locals and daily commuters say food is being prepared and served from the premises.

Many residents have expressed concerns over health and safety, saying it is inappropriate to cook and sell food from a toilet complex.

Some locals also questioned the stall operators about whether they had the necessary permission. The operators reportedly said they had received approval from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

A GMC official told The Assam Tribune that the public toilet complex is managed by the Lions Club. He said the food stall has a valid licence and was permitted by the then Commissioner.

Lions Club Responds

A representative of the Lions Club said the stall was started to provide affordable food to patients, attendants, and visitors of the nearby Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute.

“We take all necessary hygiene precautions. The toilets are cleaned regularly, so there is no sanitation issue,” the representative said.

Despite the official permission, many residents have urged the authorities to clarify whether the arrangement complies with food safety and public health regulations. They want to ensure that proper hygiene standards are being maintained.
