GUWAHATI: A girl posing as ‘relative’ attacked an elderly woman at her house at Six Mile area in Guwahati and decamped with gold ornaments.

Anjana Dutta, wife of Prabodh Dutta, a retired director of Assam Agriculture University, was alone in her room at city’s Chandan Nagar area when a girl, appearing to in her mid twenties, arrived there around 5.30 pm on October 10.

The girl, who claimed to be connected to the native village of the elderly woman’s husband in Pathsala, said that she had come to invite them to her wedding.

“My mother was approached by this girl named Debangshi Bhuyan who claimed to be connected to my father’s native village Pathsala. She was in my place to invite my parents to her upcoming wedding. She looked decent and my mother let her in the house.

“After an hour of conversation, my mother asked her to leave as she was uncomfortable with her questions related to jewellery and insisting on showing her the designs,” said Rupashree Dutta, daughter of the woman.

When Anjana Dutta went to open the door, the girl hit her head with a hammer from the back and she fell on the floor.

“Disturbingly, this girl had carried a hammer in her bag and hit my mother three times till she fell on the floor lying in a pool of blood. Luckily my mother could still scream which scared off this girl and she started running downstairs.

“My father who was inside the bedroom (the girl was unaware that my dad was at home) came out to witness this grave situation and also my tenants downstairs saw her running and caught hold of her. But my mother needed urgent attention and in the entire hassle, she escaped,” said Rupashree.

Dutta has been admitted to city’s GNRC Hospital with grievous injuries on her head and eyes.

Based on a compliant, Dispur police has registered a case (no -2356) under IPC section 325 and collected evidence from the house. The girl is, however, still absconding.
