GUWAHATI, July 14: A brutal killing in Bhootnath has shaken Guwahati, with residents and the victim’s family demanding strict action and a wider crackdown on drugs in the area.
The victim has been identified as Hareshwar Deka, a resident of Santipur locality. According to police and family members, he died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on July 13, a day after he was found critically injured.
What Happened That Night
On the night of July 12, Hareshwar went to a house in Bhootnath, Santipur, with a friend to seek blessings from a transgender “Guru Maa.”
An argument broke out, which quickly turned violent.
Hareshwar was later found lying in a blood-soaked condition under the Bhootnath Railway Bridge. His friend reportedly fled the spot out of fear.
Local youths who found him informed the police and also recorded his final statement on their mobile phones.
Police rushed him to GMCH on Sunday night, but he succumbed to his injuries the following day. His last rites were performed on Monday afternoon.
Police Action So Far
Bharalumukh Police have arrested two people and detained two others for questioning.
CCTV footage is being examined. Police said Raza and Anwar alias “Pagla” allegedly started the assault. Later, Anwar reportedly called his brother Sanowar, while Raza called his wife Moromi Begum. The three are accused of continuing the attack.
Conflicting Claims
Initial reports blamed a transgender group, but members of the community have denied the allegation, saying they are being framed.
They, along with some local residents, have alleged that the killing is linked to a drug cartel operating in the area.
The victim’s wife, Dulumoni Deka, his mother, and neighbours are demanding a fair investigation and strict action against those responsible. They also claimed that the growing presence of drug users in the Bhootnath–Santipur area has made the locality unsafe.
The incident has created panic among residents, who are demanding increased police patrolling and a stronger crackdown on drugs.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
