Hanuman Temple Looted In Uzanbazar Area In Guwahati

In a major embarrassment for city police, thieves broke into another temple and decamped with cash and other valuables last night, making it the second such temple theft case in a week.

Last night, miscreants looted Rs 25,000 in cash from the Hanuman Temple located in the riverside area of Uzanbazar. According to police, miscreants disconnected all six closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the temple premises and then looted the cash from the office room of the temple.

Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar and DC Biswajit Pegu today visited the temple and spoke to the managing committee members and examined the place of theft. The temple is not far from the official residences of the Governor, Chief Minister and DC.

The Police Commissioner told reporters on the temple premises that an investigation has been started into the incident.

“Apparently, the thief knew that last night there was no security at the temple. He knew exactly where the CCTV cameras were and how much cash was there,” he said, adding that the available CCTV camera footages were being examined. No one has been picked up so far.

Questions are being raised on the night patrolling being conducted by police in the city and its effectiveness. On the night of May 4, thieves had stolen valuables from a Naamghar located in the same area.
