NEW DELHI: India is observing Hindi Diwas on Monday, September 14, commemorating the Constituent Assembly’s decision on this day in 1949 to adopt Hindi in the Devanagari script as the Official Language of the Union.

The occasion is observed every year to recognise the contribution and significance of Hindi in India’s administrative, literary and cultural landscape.

The constitutional framework governing the Official Language of the Union is provided under Article 343, which states that Hindi in the Devanagari script shall be the Official Language of the Union.

English also continues to be used for official purposes under the Official Languages Act.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his Hindi Diwas message, highlighted India’s linguistic diversity and said the progress of Hindi should go hand in hand with the protection and promotion of other Indian languages.

He emphasised that India’s many languages and traditions represent the country’s cultural strength rather than a division.

Hindi Diwas is observed through official programmes, literary events, language competitions and other activities across the country.

The day also serves as an occasion to promote the use and development of Hindi while recognising India’s broader multilingual heritage.
