Guwahati, July 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday reviewed the flood situation in Assam and the ongoing relief operations during a telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a post on social media, Chief Minister Sarma said that the Home Minister enquired about the ground situation in the flood-affected districts and assured that the Central Government would continue to extend all necessary assistance for relief, restoration and rebuilding efforts.
According to the Chief Minister, Amit Shah reiterated that all agencies and resources of the Central Government are available to support the people of Assam during the crisis.
Relief and rehabilitation operations are continuing on a war footing in the worst-affected districts of Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo and Jorhat. Authorities said floodwaters have receded from most affected areas, allowing the gradual restoration of normalcy, although some localities remain inundated.
Government agencies are working round the clock to restore essential services, including electricity, drinking water and road connectivity, in the flood-hit regions.
The Assam Government has also announced a series of relief and rehabilitation measures for those affected by the floods. These include ex gratia assistance to the families of those who lost their lives, financial aid for affected households, and educational support for students impacted by the disaster.
The state government will begin assessing damage to houses, livestock, fisheries and agricultural crops from August 3, following which compensation will be provided to eligible beneficiaries under the relief and rehabilitation package.
The flood situation in Upper Assam has improved in recent days, but authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas closely as more rainfall has been forecast over the coming days.
