The foundation stone for the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Advanced Radar Research Centre was laid at Chandrapur near Guwahati on Monday, September 21, marking a major development in Assam’s growing role in India’s space infrastructure.
The facility is being established under Project NETRA, ISRO’s initiative for tracking and analysing objects in space. The centre will strengthen India’s ability to monitor space debris and other objects in orbit, while supporting efforts to protect critical space assets.
The Assam government has allotted around 6.61 acres of land for the project. The facility is expected to contribute to India’s space situational awareness capabilities and strengthen the country’s ability to monitor potential risks to satellites and other space infrastructure.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony and described the project as a significant milestone for the state.
The establishment of the facility at Chandrapur is also expected to further expand Assam’s participation in strategic scientific and technological projects of national importance.
