GUWAHATI, June 5: Senior BJP leader and Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallabaruah was on Thursday sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government as part of the first cabinet expansion of the new term.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mallabaruah and other ministers at a ceremony held at the Jyoti-Bishnu International Auditorium in Guwahati.
Mallabaruah’s inclusion in the expanded cabinet marks his return to the Council of Ministers after having served in the previous BJP-led government, where he held key portfolios including Public Health Engineering, Tourism, Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Development, and Housing and Urban Affairs.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Mallabaruah expressed gratitude to the party leadership and reiterated his commitment to contributing towards Assam’s continued growth and development.
He said the renewed responsibility would inspire him to work with greater dedication for the welfare of the people and the progress of the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Nalbari legislator also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia and party workers for their continued support and confidence in him.
Mallabaruah further acknowledged the trust reposed in him by the people of Nalbari and Assam, stating that public support remained the driving force behind his commitment to public service.
Prior to the cabinet expansion, Mallabaruah had described the opportunity to continue serving in government as both an honour and a significant responsibility. He had said that the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the developmental agenda pursued by the Assam government would continue to guide his work.
A three-time MLA, Mallabaruah first represented Nalbari in the Assam Assembly between 2011 and 2016 and returned to the legislature in 2021 before securing re-election in the 2026 Assembly polls.
His reinduction comes at a time when the BJP-led NDA has returned to power in Assam with a strong mandate, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma becoming the first Chief Minister in nearly two decades to secure a consecutive term in office.
Political observers view Mallabaruah as one of the key members of the government’s development-oriented team, particularly in sectors relating to urban infrastructure, drinking water supply, tourism promotion, skill development and public service delivery.
With the new government beginning its second term, Mallabaruah said he would continue working towards the vision of building a stronger, more prosperous and self-reliant Assam.
