GUWAHATI: West Garo Hills (WGH) police arrested a resident of Assam after he was accused of allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl.

According to sources, the accused raped the girl in a cashew nut plantation at around 8 pm on August 22.

The victim’s clan members filed a case on August 29 after they related the incident to her family.

Investigation revealed that the accused, identified as Maidul Islam, was married to a woman from WGH and had another wife in Assam.

Islam was living with his second wife in Garo Hills. He hid his marital status and promised to marry the victim before taking advantage of her.

The victim informed her grandfather about the incident with Islam, after which they filed an FIR.

“We have arrested the accused, and he is in custody. The case falls under POCSO and details of what happened are being investigated,” WGH Superintendent of Police, DR MGR Kumar said.

Meanwhile, turning their attention to the rape case that rocked the plain belt earlier this month, police informed that they arrested a second suspect. The identity of the suspect is yet to be revealed, police said.

“We are very close to a breakthrough in arresting the third person named in the FIR,” confirmed the SP.
