Mizoram schools not to reopen on Jan 15

AIZAWL, Jan 8 – The Mizoram Government has changed its earlier decision to reopen schools in the State from January 15.

State Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte said that even though his department had tentatively planned to reopen schools from January 15, it would not be possible to do so.

“After consulting experts from the Health Department and the State Disaster Management Authority, it has been concluded that the situation is not yet favourable for reopening of schools. Therefore, we have decided not to reopen schools on the scheduled date,” Ralte said.

The minister, however, said that the board examinations for Class X and XII would be conducted as scheduled in April.

As physical classes cannot be held, the Education Department has allowed online classes to continue till further notice.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in Mizoram have been closed since March 17 last year. The Government allowed high schools and higher secondary schools to reopen from September 21, 2020, but these had to be closed again after a few days following detection of COVID-19

cases among teachers and students.

Meanwhile, with three new cases, Mizoram’s COVID-19 tally today touched 4,259. The three new patients – all hailing from here – tested positive following examination of 1,092 samples on Thursday. One of the new patients had returned from outside

the State.
