In a sensational case, a missing rickshaw puller of Mangaldoi was found languishing in Bangladesh jail and it has caused a stir in the Darrang administration.
The whole thing came to light when the Darrang district administration got a letter from the Indian High Commission, Dhaka about one Mukul Hazarika was in Bangladesh jail and he had completed his term and waiting for the release. The release has not materialised as the Assam Government has not been able to identify the person.
Significantly, it has also been mentioned in the letter that due to the lack of necessary response from the State government regarding his nationality verification, he has been languishing in the Bangladeshi jail though he had completed his jail term. However, no details regarding his offence or period of conviction have been mentioned in the letter.
The Deputy Commissioner of Darrang immediately on receipt of the letter on May 7 has asked the police for making verification of the person lodged in Bangladesh’s jail.
Talking to media Phuleswar Hazarika, the father of Mukul Hazarika informed that his only son went missing three years back and a missing entry was also lodged in Mangaldai Police Station
“My son aged about 40 was earning his livelihood as a rickshaw puller in Janaram Chowk area and on that day he had gone to Janaram Chowk with my bicycle and since then he went missing along with the bicycle.”
Though the family members are full of joy on receiving information of his whereabouts, they have also expressed their inability to go to Bangladesh and receive Mukul Hazarika on account of their poor economic situation. They have appealed to the district administration and the State government to make all necessary arrangements to bring him back to Mangaldai.
It will take some time and cross bureaucratic red tapes to see Mukul Hazarika out of Bangladesh jail.
