Naba Sarania, Ajmal among 8 candidates with criminal cases

Eight of the 54 candidates contesting from the four Lok Sabha seats which go to polls on April 23 have declared criminal cases against them. Six of them have serious cases.

Sitting MP from Kokrajhar and former ULFA leader Naba Kumar Sarania has five pending cases, which has 14 serious IPC sections, including murder, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, dacoity, etc. Charges have been framed in four of the cases, according to an analysis of the affidavits by Association for Democratic Reforms.
AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, who is seeking re-election from Dhubri, has seven criminal cases lodged against him in various police stations of the State. These cases include six serious IPC sections like charges related to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and criminal intimidation. Charges have not been framed in any of the cases yet.

Ajmal’s partymen Rafiqul Islam, who is contesting from Barpeta, has two pending criminal cases against him. The cases include two serious IPC sections 123 (Concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war) and section 222 (intentional omission to apprehend on the part of public servant bound to apprehend person under sentence or lawfully committed).

Independent candidate from Dhubri Uttam Kumar Ray has one case against him, which has two serious IPC sections – murder and kidnapping. Charges have not been framed in the case filed at Abhayapuri police station.

Guwahati’s AITC candidate Manoj Sharma has five cases, which includes one charge related to criminal breach of trust and the others related to section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act.

Congress candidate from Dhubri Abu Taher Bepari has a pending case related to criminal intimidation.

AGP candidate from Barpeta Kumar Deepak Das has a defamation case against him while RPI (A) candidate from Guwahati Sadek Ali has cases related to section 138 of NI Act against him.
