Guwahati,31 july : BJP leader and television debate panelist Shehzad Poonawala has removed the “BJP National Spokesperson” designation from his X (formerly Twitter) bio, triggering speculation about his political future.
Poonawala’s updated bio now reads: “Religion: Islam, Culture: Hindu, Ideology: Bhartiya, Author: GST ki Yatra; Lifelong follower of PM Narendra Modi.” While he removed the spokesperson tag, he retained his reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The change has led to discussions that Poonawala may have stepped away from his official party role due to “personal reasons.” However, neither Poonawala nor the BJP has issued any official statement confirming his resignation or any change in his position.
From Congress to BJP
A lawyer by profession, Poonawala began his political career with the Congress. He gained national attention in 2017 after publicly questioning the party’s internal election process, alleging that it was “rigged in favour of Rahul Gandhi.”
Following his exit from the Congress, Poonawala joined the BJP and was later appointed as the party’s national spokesperson. He became a familiar face in television debates, often defending the BJP’s policies and positions.
Recent Comment Fuels Speculation
The speculation around his political role intensified after Poonawala recently shared a clip from an old interview in which he spoke about it being “time to move on from active politics.”
However, there has been no confirmation about whether the remark was linked to his BJP position or any future political decision.
Family’s Political Divide
Shehzad Poonawala is the younger brother of political commentator Tehseen Poonawala. The two brothers have often found themselves on opposite sides of political debates.
While Tehseen Poonawala has appeared on television supporting Congress viewpoints and criticising the Narendra Modi-led government, Shehzad emerged as a prominent BJP voice.
The brothers have also had public disagreements over political issues and have frequently faced each other during television debates.
