Assam Police have arrested two individuals from Mizoram for allegedly running unauthorised biometric data collection camps in Cachar district.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal said the accused, identified as Vanlalrinchhana (33) and Raymond Vatha Chozah (34), had been residing in Silchar for the past few months. They reportedly organised facial recognition and biometric registration drives at a marriage hall earlier this week.
Police stated that the duo collected facial images and biometric details of over 200 local youths, offering nominal payments of around ₹200 per participant. The individuals were allegedly informed that the exercise was associated with an American multinational company and could open up future employment opportunities.
However, officials confirmed that the accused failed to produce any valid authorisation or documentation for conducting such activities. A case of cheating has been registered, and provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 have also been invoked.
Authorities further said unemployed youths were lured with promises of quick financial gain, while technical experts have been roped in to determine the exact purpose of the data collection. The accused were produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded to two days of police custody.
