Over 1,000 militants belonging to 5 insurgent outfits lay down arms in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A total of 1,040 members of five militant outfits that were operating in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong joined the mainstream by laying down arms in Guwahati in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday.

The arms laying down ceremony was held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati by the Home department of the state government.

Apart from Sonowal, Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council (KAADC) CEM – Tuliram Ronghang, Assam Police DG Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and several other dignitaries were present in the function.

The rebels, belonging to five groups – PDCK, KNLF, KPLT, KLF and UPLA were active mostly in the hill district of Karbi Anglong, declared unilateral ceasefire with the government earlier.

CM Sarbananda Sonowal during his address praised them for abjuring the path of violence.

“You have returned to the mainstream reposing your faith and trust in the Indian Constitution and democracy. We believe in peace and peaceful co-existence. We should work as a family for the state’s overall development,” Sonowal said.
