Keeping view of the World Environment day 2021, the Voice of Environment (VoE) and Xomadhan (a self-help group) conducted a plantation drive at B. Borooah College Guwahati premises on 6th June 2021. For environmental sustainability, nation-building activities, green and food secured state, an ongoing mission started by the team VoE earlier. The team has planted some fruit-bearing tree saplings such as Xilikha (Indian hog plum), Aamlokhi (Indian gooseberry), Jalfai (Olive), Madhuri Aam (Guava), Kordoi (Star Fruit). With the necessary components such as vermicompost, coco-peat so that the tree saplings endure in the coming days with induces natural growth.
Fruit-bearing trees are significant as we will have fresh fruits to eat, our land will not suffer from soil erosion, there will be fewer landslides and flooding, and in addition, we will have fresh air to breathe. Apart from providing us with the sheer joy of picking out fresh fruit, fruit trees can also contribute to a healthy ecosystem. By planting fruit trees, the greenhouse effect can be reduced and slow the rate of global warming.
The Voice of Environment (VoE) team has led by Bhaskar Hazarika, Dhanjit Gogoi from Xomadhan, and Environmentalist Mr. Moharana Choudhury. The College staff provided their support during the plantation drive. Dr. Diganta Choudhury, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, B. Boruah College, and his students and staff were present during the campaign.
The purpose of this small plantation drive is to generate consciousness, send a symbolic message amongst the citizens and students of our state and country, the significance of plants directly related to our ecological balance, food security, vision clean, and green Assam initiative. Since the entire world faces a Covid-19 pandemic, we need to opt for a better, cleaner, greener, food secured, and sustainable environment.
