In a must-win bypoll, Mamata Banerjee beat her nearest rival with more than 58,300 votes. With this, Banerjee will continue as West Bengal chief minister.

“I have won the Bhabanipur Assembly bypolls with a margin of 58,832 votes and have registered the victory in every ward of the constituency. I thank all the voters for the win. This is for the first time that we have not lost in a single ward in Bhabanipur,” Banerjee said greeting supporters outside her residence in Kolkata.

She added that she will continue to work for the people.
The TMC is also ahead in Murshidabad’s Samserganj and Jangipur constituencies, where votes are being counted for the assembly elections.

After 21 rounds of counting, Banerhee got a total of 58,832 votes trouncing BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal (26320) and CMP candidate Srijeeb Banerjee (4201).

The counting of votes for by-elections in Bhabanipur, Jangipur, and Samserganj Assembly constituencies in West Bengal began at 8 am on Sunday amid tight security.

Bhabanipur, in south Kolkata, has twice elected Banerjee twice before: this time she is contesting against BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal and the CPM’s Srijib Biswas. Banerjee, in West Bengal assembly elections earlier this year, dropped Bhabanipur to contest from Nandigram in East Midnapore district, but lost to her former confidant-turned-BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by 1,956 votes.
