Excess water to be released from Umiam Dam

The Meghalaya administration sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioners of two Assam districts, Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R) on Friday, that there is a possibility of flooding downstream of the Umiam River and beyond the Umiam Dam.

According to the Chief Engineer (C), Hydro Planning & Hydro Construction, Maintenance & Small Hydro, MePGCL, Shillong, there is a possible chance to release excess water from Umiam Dam.

As a result, they requested that a public declaration be made, according to the official. Moreover, the two districts of Assam have been placed on high alert due to the possibility of flooding.

However, at least 12 persons died in Meghalaya on Friday as a result of rain-related disasters, including nine who died in landslides and three who died in flash floods in Baghmara, South Garo Hills.
