Guwahati: The Patharquarry Durga Puja Committee is celebrating its 26th year of reverence and festivity, a moment that reflects both tradition and innovation in the heart of Assam. This year’s festivities are marked by a distinctive theme rooted in ancient archaeology and eco-friendliness, inviting devotees to engage with the pressing concerns of our time. The Patharquarry Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee has chosen to construct a pandal that resembles a cave, symbolizing the deep historical and spiritual heritage of our land. As one approaches, the mouth of the cave serves as a portal to the majestic idol of Goddess Durga, evoking the imagery of a sacred relic discovered amidst the embrace of nature.
In a conversation with Pratap Talukdar, the Secretary of the organizing committee, he emphasized the significance of the festival. Celebrated with devotion on October 9 (Maha Sasti), October 10 (Maha Saptami), and culminating on October 11 (Maha Asthami), this year’s budget stands at approximately 16 lakhs. Despite challenges posed by adverse weather conditions impacting preparations, the committee remains optimistic for the days ahead.
Reflecting on past themes, Mr. Talukdar noted that last year’s focus was on the foundation of the Ram Mandir. This year, however, the committee has opted for a fresh perspective that intertwines spirituality with ecological awareness. A striking feature of the pandal is a tree trunk with a saw perched atop it, symbolizing the alarming normalization of deforestation. This poignant imagery serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by young saplings that strive for survival under the relentless sun, illustrating the dire need for protection and nurturing of our environment.
Mr. Talukdar expressed a deep desire for this theme to resonate with the community, urging a collective awakening to the importance of reforestation and environmental stewardship. He believes that through this celebration, attendees will be inspired to plant trees, thus contributing to a greener and healthier future.
The Durga Puja festival holds profound significance in Assamese culture, commemorating the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura—a timeless symbol of good triumphing over evil. More than a religious observance, Durga Puja acts as a unifying force, bringing together diverse communities in a shared expression of devotion and joy. It is a vibrant tapestry of cultural performances, artistic decorations, and sacred chants that fill the air with reverence.
As the streets come alive with lavishly adorned pandals and the spirit of togetherness, this year’s Durga Puja in Patharquarry stands not only as a celebration of divine power but also as a call to action for environmental consciousness, echoing the teachings of our rich spiritual heritage. May this festival inspire all to honour both the goddess and the earth, fostering a legacy of harmony and sustainability for generations to come.
