October 9— The Assam Police made significant strides in their anti-narcotics efforts, seizing 80,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 8 crore in Karimganj district.
Acting on reliable intelligence, police intercepted a vehicle at the Churaibari checkpoint on the Assam-Tripura border on the evening of October 8, according to a senior police official from Karimganj.
“After a thorough search, the police team recovered eight packets of Yaba tablets (totalling 80,000 tablets) from the hood of the vehicle. The police apprehended two individuals,” the official reported.
The arrested suspects, Tinku Malakar and Sujit Deb from Tripura have been taken into custody. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 8 crore.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the police’s actions on social media, stating, “Based on credible intelligence, @karimganjpolice successfully executed an anti-narcotics operation, intercepting a truck and seizing 80,000 Yaba tablets. Two individuals have also been apprehended in connection with this case. Good job by @assampolice.”
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Earlier, on Monday, a joint operation conducted by Assam Rifles and the police resulted in the seizure of 10,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 1 crore in Karimganj, leading to one arrest.
Karimganj ASP Pratap Das explained that the operation was launched in the Badarpur police station area after receiving intelligence about narcotics transportation. “We had source information regarding the movement of narcotics, which led us to initiate an operation in the Badarpur area, resulting in the apprehension of Dilwar Hussain Choudhary, a 23-year-old from the Katigorah area. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 1 crore,” ASP Das stated.
Notably, on October 6, police seized drugs worth Rs 3 crore in the Karbi Anglong district, arresting two suspects in connection with that case.
