In the wake of Ratan Tata’s passing at age 86, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep grief, acknowledging the immense impact Tata had on the state. As a recipient of Assam’s highest civilian honor, the ‘Asom Baibhav’, Tata held a special connection with the people of Assam, having played a pivotal role in its development.
Sarma reflected on Tata’s enduring legacy, describing him as a figure of compassion, wisdom, and an unwavering advocate for India’s progress. “With his loss, Assam has lost one of its greatest supporters,” Sarma stated. Tata’s relationship with Assam was marked by several key initiatives, including the foundation of the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, aimed at transforming healthcare in the region. Beyond healthcare, Tata’s contributions extended to Assam’s industrial growth, most notably through his role in establishing a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Jagiroad, a project expected to create substantial employment for local youth.
In recalling his interactions with Tata, Sarma emphasized the impact of their conversations, particularly during his last visit to Mumbai to thank Tata for the semiconductor project. “His humility and simplicity are unforgettable, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void,” Sarma said, offering his condolences to the Tata family.
Earlier in the year, Tata expressed his excitement about the Tata Group’s significant investment in Assam’s semiconductor industry, a Rs 27,000 crore initiative to establish a cutting-edge chip manufacturing plant in Jagiroad. “This development will elevate Assam to the global stage,” Tata said, acknowledging the support of Chief Minister Sarma. The facility is projected to produce 48 million chips daily, serving industries ranging from automotive and consumer electronics to telecommunications and mobile technology. Alongside this, the Tata Group has worked with the Assam government to build several cancer care hospitals, further cementing Tata’s commitment to improving the state’s healthcare.
On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for three major semiconductor facilities across India, with one located in Assam. Tata Group is spearheading two of these projects, which represent a significant move toward self-reliance in this vital industry. “The policies we enact today will secure India’s strategic advantage in the future,” PM Modi said, highlighting the government’s push to establish India as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing. Production at these plants is expected to begin by 2026, marking a major milestone for the nation and the region.
As Assam reflects on the indelible contributions of Ratan Tata, it’s clear that his vision, particularly in the areas of healthcare and industry, has shaped a path toward lasting development that will benefit the state for years to come.
