New Delhi: In a big development in the 2002 Gujarat riots case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday admitted a plea filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. In her plea, Zakia Jafri has challenged the clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other leading politicians and bureaucrats by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2002 Gujarat riots. The top court will take up the plea for hearing on November 19.
Zakia Jafri had moved the Supreme Court after the Gujarat High Court last year upheld the SIT report giving a clean chit to the PM and others who had been accused of a “larger conspiracy” in the riots.
Zakia Jafri is the widow of former Congress parliamentarian Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the Gujarat riots of 2002. He was among the 69 people who were killed at Gulbarg Society in Ahmedabad by the mob on February 28, 2002.
The riots had broken out in Gujarat after the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, in which 59 people were charred to death following a fire inside the Sabarmati Express train near the Godhra railway station.
