In its bid to provide free medicines to every citizen in the State, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government held a review meeting on Wednesday to gear up for the implementation of the Free Drug Policy.

Chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the meeting was also attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek, besides officials of the department.
“We are still working out the modalities and once this is done, we will introduce the Free Drug Policy for the benefit of the people at large,” Hek said after the meeting.

He said a total of 72 essential medicines will be made free of cost for the people of the State.

He also informed that the formulation of a monitoring system for the distribution of medicines from the level of the DHS to the DMHO down to the CHCs and PHCs was also discussed during the meeting. Hek said the government will have to spend Rs 100 crore annually for implementation of the Free Drug Policy in the State.
