The Guwahati Municipality Corporation (GMC) has failed to shift the waste dumping ground from present location near Deepor Beel to Chandrapur area within the deadline. The GMC has failed to follow the direction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The NGT in its order had directed the GMC to take steps to shift the dumping ground from the present site near Deepor Beel in Pachim Boragaon to the proposed site in Chandrapur area within June 30. Admitting their failure, an official of GMC said, “We have not yet shifted the dumping ground to Chandrapur area due to some issues.”
Meanwhile, the GMC authorities have further informed that they would appeal for an extension of date regarding the matter.
It may be mentioned here that several environmentalists as well as civil bodies have been urging the government to shift the dumping ground from Pachim Boragaon alleging that the garbage disposed of at Pachim Boragaon has been polluting and intoxicating the water at Deepor Beel, which is one of the recognized wetlands for undertaking conservation measures on the basis of its biological and environmental importance.
