GUWAHATI, Nov 27 – Registering its strong protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) today took out a huge procession in Guwahati, asking the State as well as the Union government not to proceed with their plan to give citizenship to illegal Bangladeshi migrants in the name of religion.
Nearly 5,000 AJYCP activists from different corners of the State took part in the protest march from Guwahati Club to Latasil playground shouting anti-CAB slogans and asking people to unite for the cause.
“We warn the government that we would go to the highest level of democratic protest if this Bill is forcefully imposed on the people of Assam against their will. AJYCP won’t compromise on its stand against the Bill and will launch more vigorous movements in the days to come. The Bill must be repealed in its entirety, otherwise Assam will become a second Tripura,” Parishad president Rana Pratap Barua said.
Addressing the protesters, senior journalist Adip Kumar Phukan said that it is time for the Assamese people to adopt staunch regionalism like the Marathi people so that the undemocratic, fascist forces cannot impose their decision on them.
AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai criticised the State government and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for not taking a clear stand against the CAB. “As the leader of the people of Assam, the Chief Minister should first think about the imminent threat to the indigenous population and not about his power and position. While other chief ministers of the north-eastern states are opposing the Bill, Sarbananda Sonowal’s unconvincing stand has disheartened the people of Assam,” he said.
“People are the biggest power in a democracy and despite all the power and might of the ruling party, its evil design can be foiled if the people of Assam, particularly the youths, are united against this Bill,” he added.
The AJYCP leaders also stated that the ruling BJP is using CAB as a tool for political benefits without considering its disastrous impact on Assam, its demography and the future of the indigenous people. They appealed to the Chief Minister to take a strong stand against the Bill before it is too late.(ASSAM TRIBUNE)
