IMPHAL, Dec 20 – Police in the State capital had a hard time controlling a group of anti-CAA protesters on a crowded street here today.
People from different walks of life have been staging various forms of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the State since the last few days.
In today’s demonstration, a large number of people converged at Khwairamband Keithel in the heart of Imphal.
However, the police immediately rushed to the spot and attempted to disperse the protesters. As the demonstrators defied the police warning and continued their protest, a heated exchange of words ensued. The police detained some persons and tried to whisk them away. However, following strong resistance, the police later set them free.
Before the demonstration in the crowded market place, the citizens had gathered at Iroishemba in Imphal West and staged a peaceful protest there. The protest was staged to show solidarity to the people of Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and other cities of the country who are fighting against the CAA.
