Continuing its opposition against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the Cotton University Students’ Union has called upon the State government to make its stand clear on the controversial bill immediately.
We are protesting against the bill and will continue to do so to serve the interests of the people. We wish to make it clear to the government that the students of Assam will not accept the bill in any form. We urge the State government to immediately clarify its stand on the bill, whether they are opposing or supporting it,” general secretary of the Union Rahul Bordoloi said while addressing the media today.
“The government will have to face dire consequences if they fail to protect the interests of the people of Assam. We will revive the memories of six-year Assam agitation in the 1980s which saw disruption of classes and daily protests,” he added.
The Union urged all leaders of the Northeast to oppose it.
“The students of the University will stage a series of protests against the bill in the coming days. A mass agitation programme is being organised on December 6 against it. We urge the people of the State to join us in this protest. We are also banning the entry of any CAB supporter in the institution,” Bordoloi further said.
The Union criticised the stand of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Asom Sahitya Sabha and the Congress.
“The stand of the AGP and the Asam Sahitya Sabha on the issue is fragile and the leaders of the Congress are adopting a dual stand on the bill. In the Barak valley they are supporting it while in the Brahmaputra valley its leaders are opposing the bill,” former general secretary of the Union Deepjyoti Das said.
As a part of their protest, a group of students had protested in front of the AGP party headquarters yesterday and burned effigies of senior AGP leaders.
