Signing of the accord with four factions of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) has brought an end to gun culture and the next challenge is to provide good governance to the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), said Promod Boro, who recently relinquished charge as the president of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Talking to The Assam Tribune, Boro, who served as the ABSU president for 11 years, the longest tenure in the history of the organisation, said that a political solution to the issues raised by different Bodo groups could be achieved without bifurcating Assam because of coordinated efforts by all concerned, including different agencies of the State and Central governments and political leaders. “Now it is time for similar kind of coordinated efforts to ensure implementation of the accord in the interest of allround development of the BTR,” he added.
On his decision to join active politics, Boro said during his long association with the ABSU in different capacities, he had learnt a lot about the problems in the society. “As I was associated with student movements, I have seen the society from close quarters and saw that the State and Central government schemes were not implemented properly in the Bodoland area, while, the elected council also failed to take up innovative schemes for the benefit of all sections of people. There is need for providing good governance to the people and that is why I decided to join active politics,” he said. He, however, said that he is yet to decide whether to contest in the ensuing BTR polls or not. Boro stressed the need for value-based politics in the area and hoped that the ensuing polls would be free and fair.
The elections to the BTC always witnessed large scale violence and as all the militant outfits have signed the peace pact, the ensuing polls should be free and fair, and all parties should give respect to the democratic values, he added.
