GUWAHATI, June 5 – A water pipe of the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-assisted water supply project burst this afternoon at the intersection of the Latasil traffic point and the Gauhati High Court.
A source in the Board said the incident occurred during a hydro-test of the pipes installed there.
Guwahati Development Department Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, along with the officials from the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board and the Public Works Department, visited the site to take stock of the situation.
“Hydro-tests are done to check whether the newly installed pipes can bear the water pressure. The pressure is much higher than normal. It also checks any damage or leakage in the pipes,” Bhattacharya said.
This is the second such incident to have occurred in the same area this year.
It caused waterlogging on the road, leading to disruption in traffic movement. The rapidly flowing water even entered the Latasil PS. The project was launched to supply water to all households across the city.
