Darrang district is presently reeling under this year’s third wave of floods.
During the last 24 hours, flood waters inundated several new areas with the water level of the Brahmaputra and its major tributaries flowing through the district above the danger level. The water level was maintaining a rising trend today.
Talking to this newspaper, the Circle Officer of Mangaldai, Dipsikha Saikia said that her Circle has been the worst hit in the district with a total of 69 villages being adversely affected.
Nearly 50,000 people in these villages have been affected. The flood-affected people have shifted into camps in two government schools of Mangaldai town for shelter before the authority opened any relief camps.
Similarly, floods affected 58 villages in Sipajhar. Nandan Nilotpal Bhagawati, Circle Officer of Sipajhar informed this correspondent today that flood waters were overflowing National Highway-15 at two points of the Circle.
Again, 53 villages under Dalgaon and three in Pathorighat revenue circle of the district were affected today.
Flood waters submerged 183 villages covering all the four revenue circles of the district. The overall population affected in the district has reportedly increased by more than 70,000 in the last 24 hours to touch 1,86,400.
Nearly 12,000 hectares of cropland and more than 1.20 lakh livestock have so far been affected by the surging waters. There were reports about fresh breach of dykes and washing away of PWD roads, bridges and culverts at Kapilisatra, Neogpara, Dahi Nagaon and at Garubandha.
