The flood situation in Kamrup district further aggravated today with the Brahmaputra and Jaljali rivers rising alarmingly. The Brahmaputra was flowing 101 cm above the danger level at 3 pm at Panikhaiti in Palasbari Revenue Circle today.
This is considered as the greatest flood in the last 22 years since 1998 in South Kamrup. The water is still rising, causing irreparable losses to the people and creating panic among the concerned families. Incessant rains today has further aggravated the situation.
Sources said that over 100 villages under Palasbari, Goroimari, Nagarbera, Hajo and Chamaria revenue circles in Kamrup district have been badly affected.
Over 45 villages under Goroimari Revenue Circle have been completely submerged by flood waters, while in Chamaria Revenue Circle, over 30 villages have been inundated by the flood waters of Brahmaputra and Jaljali rivers.
In Nagarbera Revenue Circle, over 15 villages have been affected by floods.
Amal Das, president of Pijupara Gaon Panchayat said that three relief camps (at Nagarbera High School, Nagarbera Girls’ High School and Dukusi Adarsha Vidyalaya) have been set up at Pijupara Gaon Panchayat under Nagarbera Revenue Circle, but relief is yet to be distributed among the inmates. He said that flood water has been flowing above the crucial Hekera-Nagarbera PWD road under Boko LAC and surface communication through the road, a lifeline for over 1000 families, has been completely disrupted.
Several villages under Palasbari Revenue Circle are reeling under heavy floods and in some cases, water has reached the roof tops of several houses in those villages. Besides, several other villages have also been partially inundated. Several relief camps have been set up in which cattle and people are taking shelter. Relief is yet to reach the affected families in almost all the affected areas.
In Hajo Revenue Circle also, several villages are under water, creating panic among the people. Musa Ali, a teacher of Laopara, told this scribe over telephone that besides the menacing flood, formidable erosion has so far eroded houses and habitations of over 170 families in Kurihamari and Bhangonmari Gaon Panchayat under Barkhetri LAC in Nalbari district in the last 20 days and nobody from the government has come forward to rescue and rehabilitate the marooned landless flood-affected families.
