Meghalaya will close down its entry points for nine days from July 23. Meanwhile, the State Government has also put restrictions on holding wedding receptions in Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts.

The decision to close down the entry points was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today. However, people facing medical emergencies, armed forces and those having transit passes from other States will be allowed to move through.

“Health workers and the district administrations at the different entry points have been working tirelessly for four months. This temporary closure of the entry points will unburden their workload,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said.

He said that during this period, Health workers and other officials engaged at the entry points, would undergo training with behavioural change management committees.

The entry points which will remain closed during the stipulated period are Byrhnihat (Ri-Bhoi), Ratacherra (Jaintia Hills), Bajengdoba (East Garo Hills), Tikrikilla (West Garo Hills), Mirjumla (South West Garo Hills) and Haldiaganj (East Garo Hills).

The Deputy Chief Minister said that Meghalaya residents willing to return to the State should plan their journey accordingly. He said that on an average, 150 people are entering the State on a daily basis. Moreover, it has also been decided that the entry point at Byrnihat would be shifted to a different location in the coming days, Tynsong said.
